Les pronoms d’objet indirect

Indirect object pronouns translate to to him, to her, or to them. In French, they are always written in front of the verb as lui or leur.

Indirect object pronouns only ever replace people, and they must have the preposition à in one of its forms.

1. à, à la, à l’, au + one person = lui

2. à, aux + more than one person = leur

Ils ont parlé aux amis. (They talked to their friends.)
Ils leur ont parlé. (They talked to them.)

Nous ne vendons pas à la fille. (We don't sell to the girl.)
Nous ne lui vendons pas. (We don't sell to her.)

Elle aime écrire les textes à Marc. (She likes to write texts to Marc.)
Elle aime lui écrire les textes. (She likes to write texts to him.)

Both direct object pronouns (le, la, l', les) and indirect object pronouns (lui, leur) can replace people. However, to use lui or leur, the sentence must have à in front of the people being replaced.
